Paris groaned as the dwarf continued his routine. Tergil had been right earlier: Dirk was rubbish at rapping.

He looked around the audience, now including the six Jallengard police officers from the gate. The faces of the crowd were a mixture of stunned silence, incredulity and – terror? Not everyone, but certainly a few. Paris remembered what he’d said to Bonetti in the officers’ mess: those who lived in the magic world had no knowledge of rap music, good or bad, and this alien sound must be a total culture shock to them. One they could do without hearing any more of.

Paris clamped a hand on Dirk’s shoulder.

‘I think that’ll have to do,’ he said, pointing up at the black clouds which now hung over them. ‘It’s going to start raining soon. We need to get inside. All these good folks do too.’

Dirk lowered his pistols. ‘Good idea, Mr Parrots. I can do a show in the market hall!’

‘Maybe some other time,’ said Paris, trying to steer Dirk into moving down the road. Dirk didn’t budge. It was like trying to move a boulder.

‘Yes,’ said Tergil. ‘Not at the moment. We have other work we must attend to first.’

‘Oh,’ said Dirk. ‘Sorry. I got a bit carried away.’

He began walking along the street. Entirely of his own volition, Paris decided, the attempted steering having had no effect whatsoever.

The various magical creatures around them let the group pass through, although with more pointing and questions being asked in various languages. Dirk seemed happy to be the centre of attention, waving and smiling as they walked. Paris looked along the intended route. More of the town’s residents and would-be travellers to the human world crowded the path. This might take a while, he thought, fighting their way through this mob. Plus, if anyone else got frightened by Dirk’s clothes or singing, they could be fighting their way through a lynch mob.
